Cultivating Dreams Scholarship

Cultivating Dreams” $1,000 Scholarship, sponsored by Dade County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee, strives to provide children the local agriculture and scientific exposure to see the world through curious eyes and learn the value of Miami-Dade County agricultural community.
Funds are to be used for educating a 3rd to 5th grade level in a pre-selected school and expose those school children to science and production of agriculture in Miami-Dade County.

MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Philip and Mary Marraccini were active members of the agricultural community and were pioneers in the Ornamental Tropical Fish industry with the establishment of Summerland Tropical Fish Farms in 1950. The Philip and Mary Marraccini Memorial Scholarship was established in 2008 by Summerland Fish Farm to recognize outstanding academic and civic achievement. Qualifications for applicants are as follows:
- Minimum 3.0 GPA
- Financial need
- Academic achievement
- Community service
- Demonstrated leadership in civic and social clubs
- Plans to pursue a career in agriculture
This scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors. Applicants must be a resident of Miami-Dade County , however, applicants can be enrolled in a university outside of Miami-Dade County
The scholarship is $500. All applications must be accompanied by a sealed transcript and two letters of recommendation. Applications must be received by Friday, March 29, 2019 at 5 p.m.

WAYNE DUNAGAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Wayne Dunagan was an active member of the agricultural community. His farm produced some of South Dade ’s finest pole beans and avocados. His son and grandsons remain actively involved in agricultural production. The Wayne Dunagan Memorial Scholarship was established in 2005 by Dunagan & Son Farms to recognize outstanding academic and civic achievement. Qualifications for applicants are as follows:
- Minimum 3.0 GPA
- Financial need
- Academic achievement
- Community service
- Demonstrated leadership in civic and social clubs
- Plans to pursue a career in agriculture
This scholarship is open to college undergraduates and graduating high school seniors, with first preference given to applicants currently enrolled in undergraduate agricultural programs. Applicants must be a resident of Miami-Dade County , however, applicants can be enrolled in a university outside of Miami-Dade County
The scholarship is $1000. All applications must be accompanied by a sealed transcript and two letters of recommendation.

EMIL GROSS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Mr. Emil Gross was born in the very early years of the 20th century in the Northeast, Prussian region of Germany. He immigrated to the U.S. as a young man, moving to Miami in 1925 after working as a carpenter in Kentucky, New Orleans and Tampa. He found that there were no rooms at the YMCA, so he slept on a bench in Bayfront Park and ate the coconuts from the trees there. He quickly found work and was able to bring his sister and parents to Miami from Cleveland, Ohio in 1926. They moved into a cottage Mr. Gross had built the day before the 1926 hurricane.
In 1953, Mr. Gross gave up cabinet making as a career and became a mango grower. His 10-acre grove was due west of Zoo Miami. He meticulously hand pruned each tree, even writing an article about this which was published in Acta Horticultura, a publication of the International Society for Horticultural Science.
Mr. Gross was a very active member of the Florida Mango Forum, writing regular articles for their monthly newsletter. He also participated in an annual festival celebrating the mango, which later became known as the Tropical Ag Fiesta. He served on the Board of Directors of Southern Florida Tropical Growers, Inc., sponsors of the Ag Fiesta, from the early 1980's until the year before he died, a month short of his 100th birthday. Mangos were a true passion for Mr. Gross. He considered them the queen fruit of southern Florida.
The Emil Gross memorial scholarship was created in 2011 to recognize outstanding academic and civic achievement, and pursuit of secondary education in the area of agriculture.
